Hi Daniel,
i'm contacting you as I think you may be able to help me. I
got your address from your website Qattara that I came across via the
discussions about the Western Desert P-40. If you can't that's fine, just let me
know.
I'm an Architect in Australia and i have a great interest in
WWII era Aviation, but in addition my late Uncle was an Infantryman in the
2/32nd Batallion AIF in WWII and as I understand it he was involved in the
battles of Tobruk and El Alamein. Unfortunately for me he died when I was a kid
and unfortunately I never had the opportunity to discuss his experiences there.
However, i have one item in my collection which my Father gave me and it
belonged to my Uncle. It is a mess tin and cup set which I know is Italian and
contains beautiful inscriptions embossed onto its surfaces.
The wirting is pretty clear and from this I can make out the
Unit (The 13th Artillery Regiment) what appears to be several names and
locations in Sardinia (where I understand the unit was formed) but lso a name
and location in Albino.
I was wondering if you could possiby offer any more insights
into the original owner of this tin that i'm not seeing and also offer any
advice as to why my Uncle kept it all those years. It makes me wonder if the
owner was a prisoner perhaps or was it just that the Italian mess kits were just
better!
If I am in the wrong location please also let me know.
Look forward to hearing from you and i've found the latest
findings of your group on the P-40 fascinating reading.
Regards Andrew
